Amprion launches tender for decentralised grid booster

The transmission system operator Amprion is inviting tenders for the decentralised grid booster in order to reduce redispatch costs. Interested providers are invited to take part in the tender. Bids can be submitted after registering with Amprion until 3 April 2025.

The non-discriminatory tender covers the construction and operation of the decentralised grid booster. It is based on Section 11a of the “Energiewirtschaftsgesetz” (EnWG). The contract is expected to be awarded in summer 2025 after the bids received by the deadline have been reviewed.

To access the tender platform, interested providers must sign a confidentiality agreement in advance and complete a contact data sheet. The required documents and continuously updated information on the project can be viewed and downloaded on the following website:

Flexible batteries reduce interventions in the power grid

Together with E.ON and LEW Verteilnetz (LVN), Amprion is planning to connect a network of large batteries to the regional electricity grid in Bavarian Swabia. The decentralised grid booster is to be implemented at five locations in LVN's grid area and will have a total capacity of 250 megawatts. The central location in southern Germany is particularly favourable for the grid.

The aim is to increase utilisation of the power lines in the transmission grid so that less intervention in grid operation is required. The economic costs of such redispatch measures amount to several billion euros per year. These costs are to be cushioned from 2027 onwards with the help of the decentralised grid booster before the grid expansion takes effect in the following years.

Amprion also considers the decentralised grid booster to be an important innovation project that can be used to test future usage concepts for battery storage. For this reason, the tender includes a second variant in addition to the purely grid-serving utilisation by Amprion. This allows the system operator to utilise the market for a limited period of time. This is intended to increase the capacity utilisation and thus the economic efficiency of the plant. Amprion will only decide in favour of a variant after a technical and economic evaluation of the bids.
