COMMITMENT

Society is becoming increasingly aware of the extinction of species and the associated threat to ecosystems. Insects perform many important tasks in our ecosystems. However, the habitat for these little helpers is continuously shrinking.

FLOWER & POWER

As part of our sustainability strategy, Amprion is converting unused areas in substations into species-rich flower meadows. Since 2020, we have been creating flowering meadows in our grid areas and installing nesting aids for insects in our primary technology areas. The most important principles are the use of regional seeds and ensuring that the flowering meadows are maintained by our local gardening and landscaping companies. Wherever possible, the nesting aids are produced by regional workshops to strengthen local relationships. As these measures received a very positive response so far, we will be expanding the concept to other locations in the upcoming years.

By using different plant species, we are creating a wide range of options for insects and thus increasing biodiversity in these areas. We are also developing added value for the surrounding areas.

Flower Line

Together with the Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Landscape Foundation, Amprion wants to achieve a sustainable contribution to biodiversity. In a   pilot project, we are providing a total of 34 pylon sites on agricultural land between Metternich and Pillig in Rhineland-Palatinate with flowering areas. As part of the planned project, flowering meadows are planted under these mast sites. Furthermore, a scientific monitoring is carried out with the Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Landscape Foundation, which is working in cooperation with the University of Koblenz. Initial scientific studies have demonstrated the positive effect of promoting insect diversity on agricultural land using flowering meadows under mast sites.

Sowing of flowering area began in autumn 2023. To ensure the conservation status, the areas must be regularly monitored, including conservation measures such as reseeding, site adjustments and professional assessment and management of these areas.

RENEWABLES GRID INITIATIVE

Since 2016, Amprion has been a member of the  Renewables Grid Initiative, an exchange and dialogue platform for transmission system operators and environmental associations. Amprion is involved in various national and international working groups on the environment and nature conservation, for example on the topics of bird protection, integrated vegetation management and marine protection.

What role do electricity grids play in the energy transition? From transmission to trading, from electrification to system flexibility - grids are crucial for decarbonisation. Amprion is a member of the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI), an exchange and dialogue platform for transmission system operators and environmental associations. Together, we are working on the sustainable development of Europe's electricity grids and improving the integration of renewable energies.
